TURUNC
Updated on : 19th October, 2017
Turunç is a small town located in the east of the Bozburun Peninsula. It is surrounded by high pine-covered hills and is famous for its citrus gardens. When looking at the map, the beeline distance between İçmeler and Turunç seems to last at most 10 minutes, however that's not the case at all. The road lasts 35 minutes from the center of Marmaris, owing to the mountain between two towns. And you should keep in mind that the route is full of sharp bends. Actually, this road is less tiring than before, by courtesy of the renewal of tarmac, most of which was completed this year(2017). It has been said for a long time that a coastal road would be built from İçmeler to Turunç, but there has been no improvement in this regard yet. Despite the negativity of the current route, we should remind you that the sceneries overlooking Marmaris and Turunc sides on the road is really worth seeing. To get to Turunç, you can prefer to take public minibuses that depart from Marmaris Bus Station, instead of driving. But according to us, the most enjoyable way to go to Turunc is the taxi boats that depart from the center of Marmaris. This one is an ideal choice, especially for day trippers. Taxi boats depart from near the statue of Atatürk in Marmaris. Boats can carry 12 people, and the price is 15 ₺ per person.
Since Turunç is a small and tranquil town, it has become a frequent destination for local and foreign tourists who want to have a quiet vacation. The town is so calm that, the street life ends after midnight. Anyway, the average age in Turunç is high enough.
Turunc has one of the most beautiful coasts of Marmaris. The sea is clean and clear, the ground is pebbly, and the sea water is cool. Frequent winds reduce the sun's burning effect to a certain extent. You can enjoy the blue flag beach in the center of Turunç with peace of mind. With tasty cocktails from the cafes that are lined up just behind the beaches, you can go lazy while lying on your sunbed.
There are plenty of fish restaurants in Turunç, which are famous for serving very fresh daily fish.
Kumlubük, Çiftlik and Gebekse (Pregnant Church) are three of the immaculate bays in vicinity. By taking boat trips from Turunç, you can see these bays effortlessly. Some of the tours go as far as Dalyan and Iztuzu Beach. You can also specify your own route if you rent a boat, either individually or by group. One of the activities yo can do in Turunç regarding the sea is water sports including scuba diving. Turunç serves you many options in these areas.
In a place that you can walk from one end to another in less than half an hour, you wouldn't be far from nature. So, one of the most enjoyable activities that can be done in Turunc is nature hiking and jeep safari tours. Unfortunately, there are no information signs on hiking trails, nor a table to sit for a rest or a picnic (for now).
The ancient city of Amos is located 3.5 km away from the center, and can be reached in one hour on foot. The city was one of the major towns of the Rhodes Union, and has a history of about 2,200 years. The word meaning of "Amos" is "The Temple of Mother Goddess" in Hellenic language. The city was built on a dominant spot, where you can see the all surrounding bays. Among the ruins, city's theater is one of the artifacts that could remain standing. If you are not very interested in archeology, the landscape you'd see on the hill will impress you more than Amos itself. By the way we would also like to mention the beauty of Amos beach, which is one of the permanent stops of the local boat tours.
In sum; Turunç, being the choice of those who want to make a vacation in serenity, offers many lively activities at the same time.
Bonus-1: Monday is the day for local market of Turunç. We recommend you to go there and try natural and tasty food from nearby villages. It is open from early morning to evening, in one day per week.
Bonus-2: On the route from the İçmeler to Turunç, if you turn right from Osmaniye turnout and drive for 3 km, you can visit the Marmaris Honey House located in Osmaniye, which is the capital of honey. Honey House attracts people's attention with its rich content and hexagonal structure resembling honeycomb. By your visit, you can get a great deal of knowledge about honey and beekeeping.
Bonus-3: Now, if you decided to go to the Honey House and have not had breakfast, we strongly recommend you to have your breakfast at Şahin Restaurant (Muhammet'in Yeri) opposite of the Osmaniye Mosque. Along with being a bit shabby place, the prices are quite reasonable, and food is natural and really tasty. He also sells honey and honey products.
